Where It Started

Like most people, I put it off. My parents were getting older, and there were things we needed to talk about — their accounts, their wishes, who had the documents, what they wanted — and every time, life got in the way.

It's not that we didn't care. It's that no one wants to be the person who brings it up. And then one day, you realize you're out of time to have the conversation calmly, on your own terms, when everyone is well.

I started building AmberLetters the way most useful things get built: because I needed it and nothing quite right existed. I wanted something that would make it easy for my parents — and eventually for me — to get everything organized and leave something real behind. Not a cold legal form. Something a family could actually use.

What surprised me was how much people wanted to do this. Once you give someone the structure and the prompts, the words come. The information surfaces. People who hadn't thought about their accounts in years suddenly had them listed. People who had never written a letter to their children wrote three.

AmberLetters is a personal document organizer. What you create here is not a legal will, not a trust, and not a substitute for estate planning with a qualified attorney. We are very deliberate about this.

What we are is the preparation that makes working with an attorney better and faster. Clients who walk into a first meeting already organized — accounts listed, wishes documented, decisions made — spend less time and money in that office. That preparation more than pays for itself.

We also don't store your information permanently. AmberLetters is a tool for creating and downloading your document — not a long-term data repository. What you write stays yours. Your final document is a PDF you control.
